A 1:N or 1:1 serial communications protocol for balanced transmission using a twisted-pair cable. "RS" is an abbreviation for "recommended standard." RS-422A uses full-duplex communications with four wires, while RS-485 uses half-duplex communications with two wires. The RS-485 communications protocol was standardized to be upwardly compatible with RS-422A. RS-485 enables the configuration of multi-drop communications links on which a maximum of 32 drivers and receivers can be connected, which is not possible with RS-422A.
