Finger Vein Authentication Device "UBReader2"

Has Achieved "Common Criteria" Certificate at EAL2



Tokyo, February 16, 2012 - Hitachi, Ltd. and Hitachi-Omron Terminal Solutions, Corp. today announced that its finger vein authentication device "UBReader2" has achieved certificate of Common Criteria that is an international standard (ISO/IEC 15408) for information technology security certification at Evaluation Assurance Level 2.

Common Criteria defined the procedure for the purposes of evaluating and accrediting products and solutions for use in IT security. It ensures that the process of security target specification, implementation and evaluation of the security product has been conducted in a rigorous and standardised manner.

Finger vein patterns have a variety of structures according to people and it is extremely difficult to forge them. Therefore, finger vein authentication technologies provide high levels of security functionality, good usability and convenience as well as privacy compliance for the users. In recent years the finger vein authentication device has been applied to financial institutes that require highly secure systems. The need for third party evaluations for information technology security is growing among both Japanese and other country's Government and financial institutions.

Finger vein authentication devices have been specifically designed to provide the levels of security functionality required in financial and Government sector applications. The award of this Common Criteria certificate proves that the devices are sufficiently equipped with enough highly secure features and functions to be applied to customers in these sectors who request the most rigorous levels of security.

Hitachi Group plans to provide these finger vein devices for those who require both a high level of security and a high level of usability such as customers in the Government and financial sector.

On Common Criteria

Common Criteria (abbreviated as CC) is an international standard (ISO/IEC 15408) for information technology security evaluation. CC certificates are recognized among the 26 countries who are members of Common Criteria Recognition Agreement (abbreviated as CCRA). Evaluation Assurance Level (abbreviated as EAL) shows an assurance package covering total development process of a product. The higher EAL is, the wider security functions are evaluated. Product design information, product tests, product component administration, product delivery are evaluated in rigorous manner to achieve EAL 2.
