Production History and Control Traceability Using a Hard Disk Drive

Case Number 204

last update: April 1, 2008

Production data (serial number, lot number, etc.) is attached to each part using labels that have 1-dimensional or 2-dimensional codes.
By reading the code for each part during assembly, a link can be made that shows which part was used in which product, and this data can be stored in a database.

Know-How

Both 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional codes can be read without having to change settings.
Inexpensive and ideal for reading codes printed onto paper or labels.
The system is ultracompact, so it can be installed in a wide variety of locations.

Benefit / Efficiency

Product history data can be reliably collected for accurate traceability.
Rather than being limited to a single company, a series of history data extending from parts makers to finished product makers can be linked to improve quality in the industry overall.
